57% Would Like to Replace Entire Congress
August 31st, 2009
Given the name of this blog, you can guess this is no surprise to me. But a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of Americans would vote to replace the entire Congress and start all over again. Just 25% of voters nationwide would keep the current elected officials.
These numbers haven’t changed since last October when Congress was passing the unpopular $700-billion bailout plan, but as you can imagine there has been a partisan shift since the election. The number of Democrats who like the current Congress has grown from 25% last fall to 43% today, whereas last fall most Democrats were ready to replace the entire Congress.
The health care debate may be a key reason for this continued negative attitude toward Congress. Only 22% of those surveyed think Congress has a good understanding of the issue, and 74% trust their own economic judgment more than Congress. Which isn’t surprising given that Congress continues to drive the country deeper in debt with no sign of turning it around anytime soon.
Even more troubling, just 14% rate Congress as good or excellent in their overall performance, and only 16% believe it’s very likely that Congress will address the most important problems facing our nation.

This is a perfect example of statistics not telling the truth. If this were true, you would expect to see at least a high percentage of congressman to get kicked out of office but that won’t happen.
In nearly every poll that really gets to the heart of the matter you find the following:
- those that are the most upset don’t bother to vote anyway
- everyone hates “Washington” but their guy/girl is doing a great job so I don’t want to vote him/her out of office.
This is why the opinion polls mean so little to Congress in their actions. They know that they are hated and reviled but they also know how to work their local districts to get re-elected.
It will be interesting if the conservative Democrats in Republican leaning districts that Rahm Emanual put into place actually survive this heat but my bet is these Congressman will be sufficiently funded and stave off the challengers.
