Detroit’s Big Bailout from Congress Spurs Innovation

Meanwhile, Detroit is still hard at work on an SUV that runs on rainforest trees and panda blood.

Occasionally Congress actually does some good for our country.  Given that Congress so often provides us with bad news, I want to take this rare opportunity to highlight something truly good that Congress has done for us.

In a rare Sunday session, the Senate advanced legislation to set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as wilderness.  Democrats gathered enough votes to overcome stalling tactics from Republicans, who complained that Democrats did not allow amendments on the massive bill.

Just What We Need: Another Trillion in Debt

According to new Congressional Budget Office figures, the U.S. federal budget deficit will hit an unprecedented $1.2 trillion for the 2009 budget year.  The CBO also projects a $703 billion deficit for 2010.  The dismal figures come a day after President-elect Barack Obama warned of “trillion-dollar deficits for years to come.”

To make matters worse, the CBO figures don’t account for the massive economic stimulus bill that Obama is proposing, nor does it include the cost of the trillion-dollar Wall Street bailout.
